چکیده

Abstract Automating discovery in mathematics and science will require sophisticated methods of information extraction abstract reasoning, including models that can convincingly process relationships between mathematical elements natural language, to produce problem solutions real-world value. We analyze language processing across five strategic sub-areas (identifier-definition extraction, formula retrieval, premise selection, math word solving, informal theorem proving) from recent years, highlighting prevailing methodologies, existing limitations, overarching trends, promising avenues for future research.

A Language Engineering Architecture for Processing Informal Mathematical Discourse

We present a modular architecture for processing informal mathematical language as found in textbooks and mathematical publications. We point at its properties relevant in addressing three aspects of informal mathematical discourse: (i) the interleaved symbolic and natural language, (ii) the linguistic, domain, and notational context, and (iii) the imprecision of the informal language. The obje...

Generating Mathematical Word Problems

This paper describes a prototype system that generates mathematical word problems from ontologies in unrestricted domains. It builds on an existing ontology verbaliser that renders logical statements written in Web Ontology Language (OWL) as English sentences. This kind of question is more complex than those normally attempted by question generation systems, since mathematical word problems con...

Machine-guided Solution to Mathematical Word Problems

Mathematical word problems (MWP) test critical aspects of reading comprehension in conjunction with generating a solution that agrees with the “story” in the problem. In this paper we design and construct an MWP solver in a systematic manner, as a step towards enabling comprehension in mathematics and teaching problem solving for children in the elementary grades. We do this by (a) identifying ...
